Between1854 and 1929 more than 250,000 orphans and unwanted children were put on trains in the overcrowded East and sent out to every state in the continental United States to find new homes. The Children’s Aid Society and the New York Foundling Hospital created the largest child migration in history.
Presenters: Alison Moore and Phil Lancaster
Alison Moore, MFA, is a former Assistant Professor of English/Creative Writing in the MFA Creative Writing Program at the University of Arizona. She is the author of four books, including the historical novel Riders on the Orphan Train (2012).
Phil Lancaster was born in Texarkana, Arkansas and studied art and music at L’Ecole De Beaux Arts in Angers, France. He became a member of a bluegrass band that traveled and played throughout France and produced an
album titled Bluegrass Oldies Ltd./ Traveling Show. He has been touring nationally since 1998 with “Riders on the Orphan Train” and in 2012 received the Charles Loring Brace Award for helping to preserve the stories of
the Orphan Trains.
Charles Bryant
Charles Bryant is an award-winning singer-songwriter from Pasadena, Texas. He has released four albums to date, including the critically acclaimed Kiss The Sun, which was chosen one of 2017's albums of the year in Texas Music magazine, and one of the top 50 noteworthy Texas releases in their 20-year anniversary edition in 2020. Music journalist William Michael Smith called it a "minor masterpiece." The also critically acclaimed Unrequited album was released in 2022. In another article in Texas Music, music journalist Trey Gutierrez described Bryant as "possibly the most prolific Texas songwriter you've never heard of."
